Preface
Those planning a career in the healing professions are frequently surprised at the emphasis, which is placed on the basic sciences. It is difficult to appreciate the relevance of Ohm`s la, the Periodic Table or the structure of an amoeba to the care of a human patient. However, if you do not understand the fundamental physical, chemical and biological laws, which govern how the body works in health you will never understand how, or why, things go wrong.
Even simple acts, such as picking up and reading this booklet involve complex physical, chemical and biological activities. For ease of learning, the subjects are taught separately but, as your course develops, their mutual interdependence will become more and more obvious.
Physics involves the study of heat, light, sound, magnetism, electricity and ionising radiation, all which play essential parts in the functioning of the body and in the increasing complicated equipment used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. I therefore believe that the information included here is not merely an aid to your passing the entrance examination but explains its relevance to the care of your future patients.
